Announcing the world’s first LED lighting controller with integrated ambient light sensing

OTTAWA, ON (CANADA) March 1, 2011 – Arkalumen, a developer of advanced LED lighting technology, introduces a new line of LED lighting controllers that make it easy for lighting manufacturers to offer integrated ambient light detection directly within the luminaire. This new innovation enables a whole new class of exciting applications for energy-saving LED lighting.

According to Gerry Briggs, Arkalumen’s founder and chief scientist, developing the technology to integrate ambient light detection directly within the luminaire was no trivial matter. “Normally the light emitting from the fixture would interfere with the ambient light sensor,” claims Briggs. “What we have done is employed real-time algorithms to actuate the ambient light detection function only during the off-cycle of the LED. This allows us to accurately measure ambient light conditions in a way that is undetectable to the naked eye.”

LEDs or Light Emitting Diodes are a potential replacement for conventional light sources, offering exceptionally long-life, energy-efficiency and the reliability of solid-state technology. With this new capability, energy-efficient LED light fixtures no longer require expensive stand-alone ambient light sensors to offer daylight harvesting features, something that more and more customers are demanding. Daylight harvesting is a technique which automatically adjusts interior light levels to account for ambient light conditions.

The technology behind this new line of LED lighting controllers is patent-pending and adds to the company’s rapidly growing portfolio of intellectual property in LED lighting.

BrightCube recognized at Design Exchange Awards Gala, receives honorable mention in the category of industrial design

OTTAWA, ON (CANADA) November 25, 2009 – The Design Exchange today recognized Mark Tholen of Lumolar and Gerry Briggs of Arkalumen, co-developers of the BrightCube, for the innovative design and engineering showcased in this next-generation LED luminaire fixture. The BrightCube was recognized with an honorable mention in the category of industrial design at Canada’s premier annual design industry gala held in downtown Toronto.

This product is the result of combining Arkalumen’s innovative LED controls and thermal engineering technologies and Lumolar’s striking enclosure design. The industrial design of the product is both beautiful and functional with the unique wired mesh enclosure of the luminaire serving two important functions. According to Briggs, “This design allows the encasement to serve as natural thermal ventilation while also providing a working surface for our proprietary touch-based human-machine interface.”

The innovations of the Brightcube go well beyond the novel design and touch controls. This lamp features the latest generation of lighting-class LEDs designed to offer unsurpassed energy-efficiency and lumen life under normal operating conditions. The BrightCube is also designed to be what its name proclaims: extraordinarily bright. It delivers over 1200 lumens of dynamic full-spectrum polychromatic light using a patent-pending technology recently developed by Arkalumen. The challenge of delivering the equivalent of a 100 watt incandescent light bulb using only LEDs in such a compact form-factor required significant engineering development and experimentation. Gerry explains, “We tried dozens of different cooling strategies before settling on our final design. We use a combination of strategies to keep the LEDs running cool using passive cooling techniques. Customers simply would not accept the idea of a fan in a light so I knew we simply had to find a better solution.”

The BrightCube will soon be available for custom orders directly through Lumolar.

Arkalumen claims new breakthrough in LED lighting

Arkalumen introduces new driver and control technology designed to address the needs of high volume lighting manufacturers who seek to develop LED-based light fixtures in response to growing consumer demand for environmentally sustainable products.

OTTAWA, ON (CANADA) May 22, 2008 – Arkalumen, a developer of advanced energy-efficient LED lighting technology for OEM lighting manufacturers, was established today as a Canadian Corporation in order to commercialize a suite of innovations developed over the past three years by founder and chief scientist Gerry Briggs. The company plans to address the many challenges lighting designers face introducing new LED-based products to the market.

LEDs or Light-Emitting-Diodes are solid-state semiconductors which offer many advantages over conventional light sources, including lower energy consumption, longer operating life and improved reliability. Also, unlike fluorescent lighting, LEDs do not contain mercury – a growing public health concern as a potent neurotoxin that can cause serious contamination if not disposed of properly.

Arkalumen has developed an advanced LED driver and control solution for high-lumen lighting. Briggs claims this proprietary architecture employs a unique approach that delivers superior energy-efficiency, lumen performance, system reliability and operating life versus competing LED lighting systems.

According to Alok Mohindra, VP of Marketing at Arkalumen, “Since lighting accounts for over 20% of global electricity use and consumption is expected to double by 2030, consumers are increasingly demanding cleaner and more environmentally sustainable lighting products. LEDs consume up to 70% less energy than conventional light sources and can offer over a decade of dependable and maintenance-free service, so it’s only natural that lighting manufacturers are starting to take notice.”

“Arkalumen plans to work directly with these lighting manufacturers by offering a comprehensive line of LED light engines, high efficiency drivers and intelligent dimming solutions designed to ease their transition to a future of solid-state light.”

The future is bright for solid-state light(TM)
