Arkalumen expands founding team; files first patent in control technology for LED lighting

Arkalumen expands founding team to include expert patent and licensing strategist; files first patent in LED lighting control to address challenges faced by Lighting Manufacturers

OTTAWA, ON (CANADA) Nov 28, 2008 – Arkalumen, the Ottawa-based developer of advanced energy-efficient LED lighting technology, announced today the addition of Sean Murray to the Arkalumen founding executive team. Mr. Murray brings over 10 years of intellectual property, strategy and financial expertise to Arkalumen.

Murray joins Arkalumen after having served five years as Director, Patent Strategy & Licensing at BCE, Bell Canada’s parent company. He has also held intellectual property & licensing strategy positions with Nortel Networks, Smart & Biggar and Semiconductor Insights. Mr. Murray is a graduate of Queen’s University in electrical engineering, holds an MBA from the Richard Ivey School of Business and is a registered patent agent in the US and Canada.

Sean Murray will lead the company’s patent, licensing, and financial initiatives as the company moves aggressively towards commercializing a rapidly growing body of technical innovations in LED lighting. Lighting manufacturers face a myriad of challenges as they begin to migrate from conventional lighting to new cleaner alternatives such as LED. Arkalumen aims to develop a full line of advanced LED lighting products that will make this transition easy and cost-effective for lighting manufacturers.

“All of the members of the Arkalumen team are driven and talented and the engineering work I’ve seen so far is remarkably innovative,” said Murray. “We plan to establish a patent portfolio that captures the full value of these innovations for Arkalumen so we can continue to develop new product ideas that address the needs of this growing market.”

Pulse Width Modulation with Power Conditioning. Arkalumen’s first patent filing claims innovations in LED lighting controls that boost energy-efficiency, extend operating life, and improve system reliability compared with constant-current and conventional constant-voltage controllers that are used in commercially available products on the market today.

According to Gerry Briggs, founder and chief scientist at Arkalumen, “This patent is the foundation of our unique LED lighting platform and opens many possibilities for exciting new products that just weren’t possible until now.”
